Actually when I ran /etc/rc.d/init.d/udev start I got nothing which probably means I've done something wrong? It's LFS 6.0 also by the way.
I did recompile the kernel to try add support for older cdrom
filesystems (MS Joliet, etc) before, if that makes any difference?
Ok, do you have /proc and /sys mounted?
Are there lines for those in your /etc/fstab? See the section in the LFS book about /etc/fstab
