Glibc-2.3.4 not configuring

After entering the chroot environment, populating /dev and creating 
relevant directories and symlinks I try to configure Glibc-2.3.4 and get 
this error:

'configure:error: cannot compute suffix of object files: cannot compile'
I'm running the LFS installation from the LiveCD and am using LFS book 6.1

Any help appreciated,
