In my testing, the LiveCD requires at a minimum 48MB ram to just boot to
console. To be useful, at least 128MB is recommended. As soon as you
boot, you can partition, mount a swap partition, and then do what you like.
I have personally build using jhalfs on a P2 400 with 128MB in XFCE with
512MB swap and 6GB hdd. Just takes some time, and more memory is always
better.
The LiveCD does have a full GUI on it, XFCE, with Firefox, Thunderbird
and many other useful utilities.
