plz help!!!!!!! the meaning of source

hello everyone i am new to linux and linux from scratch while i am builiding linux from scratch using live cd i copy the packages.tar.bz2 from lfs-sources to /mnt/lfs/sources then extract them .then in all expect three the book says to delete the source and bulid folders of he package .
i am not clear  what the source exactly means is it the tarball or the folder built after extraction or both ..
 i am not clear ehich or both to delete plz  help i m struck .
