Thanks for the information. However, on HLFS20060122 hotplug was not as
obsolete as I hoped it would be. At first I lacked my networkcard, due
to the missing hotplug script that is linked to in the udev script 25-core.
I thought I was smart by overwriting these old udev rules by installing
the newer udev-update-branch scripts. Now I can't even boot. /dev/hda2
can not be created. Snicker. (laugh at my haste at your leisure)
O well, live and learn they say.

Don't worry. Everything will work. Did you also install the new udev
bootscripts from here?

http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/~dj/bootscripts/lfs-bootscripts-20060417.tar.bz2

Ok. At first I had read the udev_update_branch book, which has:
- lfs-bootscripts-udev_update-20060321.tar.bz2
and
- udev 088

Now I do have:
- lfs-bootscripts-20060417.tar.bz2
and
- udev 092

I still cannot boot though.
I am currently using a livecd and chrooting into the system. I have
added a few echo's to the /etc/rc.d/init.d/udev script. It fails somehow
in combination with /sbin/udevsettle. The error return value is 1.

After that, mounting my swap fails, remounting the root readwrite fails
and the system is a no-go.

You'll need the udev and udev_retry bootscripts from there. Look at
the Makefile how the install targets look to see the numbers given in
the runlevels. Keep in mind that if you updated to the new udev, it
works differently than the older versions.

You mean like that KERNEL= has now become KERNEL== ?

So, I should say that hotplug is obsolete as long as you have a newer
udev and you initialize it correctly.

I guess I am not. Mind you, I do NOT have kernel 2.6.15 or upwards. I
still have 2.6.14.6.
I noticed this in the udev script:
echo > /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug
What is that supposed to achieve?

Thanks for your help so far. Without any proper error message I find
this tough to diagnose.

Warren
