The book recommends building the first kernel without modules, which
seems sensible. I made sure by disabling module support, which may have
contributed to some of the glitches I'm reporting. Other than my
"multiple sessions", I followed the book quite closely (cut & paste).
I'm just beginning to work through these glitches, haven't looked them up
in the FAQ, or mailing lists yet (though if somebody has ready answers I
wouldn't mind not having to search for them ;-). It boots & runs, it's
just not "clean".
I have the following glitches:
fixed - ch6 doesn't install gzip (curious, ch5 does)
fixed? - /etc/sysconfig/modules isn't created
(I think something should at least touch it so it can be found.
I did.)
- hotplug.functions wants
/lib/modules/2.6.11.12/modules.isapnpmap (not found)
(this old box has ISAPNP cards.)
- modprobe: FATAL Could not load
/lib/modules/2.6.11.12/modules.dep
- /proc/modules: no such file or directory
- user/sysadmin accounts don't have permission to use /dev/fd0
