If you don't have broadband or don't want to contribute to stressing the
servers, downloading kernel patches can be an attractive option. Instead
of dowloading 40MB you only download a few kB.

Now, my understanding is that in order to upgrade to linux-2.6.12, you
must apply patch-2.6.12 to 2.6.11, not to 2.6.11.12. That would explain
Paul's problem.
