Thanks for that Randy. Over at http://ftp.pld.org.pl/software/shadow/
there appears to be a strangely numbered patch i.e. 

shadow-4.0.18-4.0.18.1.patch.bz2

is this to upgrade version 4.0.18 to version 4.0.18.1 ? If so its no
good since that's what I've already got.

Another thought is to install shadow-4.0.15 over 4.0.18.1, would this
work or would I have to do a 'make uninstall' on version 4.0.18.1 first?

Would there also be any any potential problems with using either of
these methods?
