I was going to point you to http://cross-lfs.org/view/1.0.0/ppc/appendices/macmiscellany.html which has some comments about booting ppc/ppc64 on OpenFirmware, but in fact it doesn't directly mention this problem. The boot partition has to be of a type that the OpenFirmware knows how to read. In other words, hfs is the only option. HTH
