Pete, I ran into this last week when I performed the installation. What I found was that I had to chown lfs:lfs the folders... also, you may need to re-check the chmod steps in the environment setup to make sure that directories are set as sticky, and that the LFS user has the correct permissions relative to the folders you are trying to delete.
