The kernel command line is in grub.cfg (attached - as is the lspci listing) I know my post was sparse...I've tried several different approaches, and I tend to go in several different directions at once, when I explain what I've tried...which just confuses the issue. I've applied the kernel config as per udev's README, and I considered that PATA drives might be going extinct, but I didn't see any obvious config parameters that would prevent them from working. I hoped that when someone saw 'here are the available partitions' was blank, (from just before the kernel panic) that they'd "Oh, silly boy, you forgot to..." Thanks, Tony Hartzell
