Thanks for the quick response. When it arrived, I was already making Autoconf, but I then went back and tried Perl-5 again and it worked *without the patch*. My current theory is that the problem was in building the temporary system and the first make, with the patch, fixed the error and the second make worked fine. I have a copy of the bash_history and a copy of the /tools directory at the end of the 'first pass'. When I get to the end of this build (successful or otherwise) I will try it again going back to the /tools directory as it was. If I can replicate the problem, I will put a little more effort into understanding the problem and then rebuild the temporary system. This is after all a learning experience.
