I have been cross checking things for over a week now and haven't been
able to spot my mistake.
Hopefully some one here will be able to suggest something that will help.

Hi Paul,
There are quite a few possibilities:
- Is it only "make" which segfaults, and no other program (sed, perl,
bash, anything built in stage 1)?
- Is it really "make" which segfaults, and not one of the commands it
tries to run?
- You say there is a core dump. Could you analyze the dump on the host,
using gdb (needs perhaps a few other steps, I have not tried myself).
