version.h would still have the LIB3DS_IS_VERSION macro etc.

It's basically required, and used in several places.  'make dist' for
example, IIRC.

One thing that Lib3ds does for Linux is just map the release version
(1.3.0) to the shared library version, which while not the usual way to
do things, works out if our policy about release versioning and changing
the interface doesn't conflict with the shared library versioning.
