BTW, it would be nice if lib3ds built as a shared library on linux/unix systems too. [I think my app is not unusual in that it uses lib3ds as one of several scene-reading front-ends, so often the lib3ds functionality is not used.]
I tried doing the "obvious" conversion to using libtool in configure.in and lib3ds/Makefile.am but couldn't get it to work. I only spent a few minutes trying though -- the problem seemed to be some sort of bizarre libtool version mismatch thing, so it be something specific to my system. I think there may be a patch to do this in the debian bug-tracking system (I don't know if the debian maintainer ever forwarded any of those -- he seems to have basically disappeared).
