As requested by Martin and Luca, here is my previous patch split in smaller patches. I've also updated the documentation at doc/protocols.texi (there were a few options that were not documented in ffmpeg either).
I left out the "seekable" heuristics and the cookies support, mostly because changes were requested but I have no way of checking the correctness of any modification to those features (I also don't care much about them anyway). This has the nice side-affect of leaving out a lot of code from the original patch (including the av_strtok() patch), so that's good I guess.
