First take a close look at output_example.c on your ffmpeg directory. It
generates dummy frames, so
I think the usual decoding process is not there... .Also, if you are a
newbie as I was when looking at it
(not a long time ago :) ) you should skip everything to compute pts and dts.

For the decoding process, you can look at ffplay.c , but if you need a
tutorial, there is
http://dranger.com/ffmpeg which explain in details some useful stuff.

note : I think avi is a file extension, and (correct me if am wrong) you can
but any video format inside.
