Chromium is definitely the right choice as far as I can see. Awesomium 1.08 was the last GPL version but is essentially abandoned. Berkelium is a re implementation along the same lines and seems to be being actively developed.
I'm happy to mentor any student doing browser work as far as I'm able. I might need some help with things like key handling as they're not things I've ever used in libavg. I'll aim to get my thoughts on the wiki tomorrow.
