Just so you know, you have FreeBSD users, who don't appreciate this.
GCC is on its last leg on our platform.
 

AC_PROC_CC_C99 will add whatever flag is needed for the compiler on your platform. The only issue I see is that developers may miss warnings about using non-ISO-C99 extensions when developing using gcc.
