I tried the pulse backend for libcanberra but that's just blocking for 
me now it seems to be stuck on a poll.. I can get an strace but my 
machine crashed (unrelated DRM kernel bug) while I was playing and I 
just went back to alsa.

Give me a shout on IRC when you are back from the states and I can see 
if I can extract further debugging from it. Still getting occasional 
segfaults from canberra (or pulse alsa plugin) too but you already know 
about them :)
