Good ideas should speak for themselves. Some of the most knowledgeable people working on PETS don't have PhDs (or sometimes, lack degrees completely.)
Anyone who stresses the "PhD" in order to imply their ideas are somehow better than others gets an eyebrow raise from me. (And that's coming from a doctoral student :) ) Also, either that's a fake name, or this "James Black" hasn't even published anything of note on the subject. Either way, he's using an appeal to authority, which doesn't sit well with me. Furthermore, I don't like the business model. Why doesn't he put the book up for free, and offer avenues for people to send him donations if they liked it? Those who would pirate the book will pirate it anyways, and those who might not have paid might download it, read it, then decide to donate.
