My problem is solved. evhttp_send_reply_chunk() method calls evhttp_write_buffer() method and this evhttp_write_buffer() method disables read callback. Here is the corresponding code snippet from evhttp_write_buffer() method : /* Disable the read callback: we don't actually care about data; * we only care about close detection. (We don't disable reading, * since we *do* want to learn about any close events.) */ bufferevent_setcb(evcon->bufev, NULL, /*read*/ evhttp_write_cb, evhttp_error_cb, evcon); In my program, after calling evhttp_send_reply_chunk() method, I enabled read callback and that solved my problem. Libevent owners, could you please think do we really want to disable that read callback? Thanks.

Now client can send the first HA: (Heartbeat Acknowledgement) after it gets the first heartbeat and server gets that. But for some reason client doesn’t get the second heartbeat. From server log, it is confirmed that server sends the second heartbeat. But I don’t know why my client doesn’t get the second heartbeat. It seems like the client is trying to act as a server once the first request has been sent, which I would expect would confuse any standard HTTP server. Should the client not instead send a new request containing the heartbeat acknowledgement instead of a HTTP response?
