I've ended up writing some utterly mind-boggling multi-part UDEV rules to produce unique AND clean names, e.g. "/dev/qpod1" for a particular Sigma Q-Pod device and "/dev/qpod2" for the next one, all happening automagically. I had to dig deeply into the persistent-net-generator rules to work that lot out.
