Thanks. I compiled from source. I missed that there is an ubuntu
binary.

IMO, you should report this issue to Ubuntu team first:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/liblas
If they find it's a bug in libLAS, we will get notified
and fix it here. Now, there is not much we can do
other than suggest you to build and install libLAS
from sources.
