Charles, Older versions of LASzip are still available from http://download.osgeo.org/laszip/ I would take the latest 1.0.x version of LASzip and match it to libLAS 1.6.1. I'll try to make libLAS 1.7.0 go final in the next week or so. It's stable enough to be a full release.
