We test with petsc-3.0 and newer, so this should not be the problem. 

This looks like either (1) the petsc libraries aren't properly being linked - 
try 'make V=1' to investigate, or (2) there is some C/C++ confusion in the 
petsc build that messing up the symbol names. Like a c++ petsc build but things 
are improperly getting an extern c?
