I'll be very happy if this functionality is preserved, or a better

Correct, probably. Supported, sadly not. We need to get a unit test
or an example or *something* hitting that functionality or I'm sure
we'll inadvertently break it again in a couple years whenever we again
juggle something low level like the DoF indexing data structures.
