Hi Erin, 

I would only use 'main subject' when describing any group of works, and 
possibly genre if you have the data. Depicts, as I understand, is generally 
applied at item level - like an individual photograph, as a way of describing 
what is visually depicted in the image being described. You can also use main 
subject at item level to denote the main thing or theme depicted in an image.
