It seems that your definition of "modern" is what I see as "bleeding
edge" or "beta". To me, "modern" means the current major version number.

It seems that in this case it is some form of bug in firefox 3.6 (svn
rev 30831) -- Apparently I wasn't using Firefox 3.5 like I thought I
was; it works fine in firefox 3.5 on Linux. Problems of having 3
different version of the same browser installed at once, I suppose.

Sure. Hopefully I am already doing so by correcting the misconception
that "it just works for most people", which is only true in a very
limited sense.

Hopefully the following will also be helpful:

First: In firefox 3.0.12, I get the following JavaScript error:

Error: audio.replaceWith is not a function
Source File: http://static.libre.fm/js/player.js
Line: 53

A similar error is found in IE 8.

It seems that support for the audio tag is needed in order to report the
error that the audio tag is not supported.

And second: On a browser which does support the audio tag, if it is
unable to connect to jamendo (or as in this case, receives a block page
replacement from an http filtering proxy...), it doesn't report any
error but instead simply sits there.

I hope this helps.
