Hi James!
I use Funtoo, you can give a try to my kernel config. For me is working like a 
charm.

Apart from the kernel I'm using betterinitramfs to initialize the full 
encrypted disk.
My main fs is XFS, so maybe you need to adjust the filesystem and initramfs 
parameters at least.
