Hi, What is missing to move on ? - hwdb-client is available for Mandriva and Ubuntu, who used it ? - does Xline provide such a tool ? - we need to provide compatibility with those means used to provide feedback *automatically* for the end-user *in the short term* to identify potential drawbacks of those databases and propose a better feedback (once each 6-month, mostly important for LiveCD for example) - we need a central database as proposed, implementation at tuxfamily.org is possible (either with MySQL or Postgres, just register at https://panel.tuxfamily.org and let me know)
What we have : - our objective is clear ;-) - a wiki to be updated http://dev.librehwdb.tuxfamily.org with new pages (DB format needs discussion) - users' demand remains the same : what does work ? we should answer : in the long term, only free driver address your request : I'd like a list like http://demo.librehwdb.tuxfamily.org/modems//modems_tab.php?lang=en&supported=yes (well : none of these modems can be recommended by FSD as they rely at least on closed-firmware). Though, this is a good example to get driver's developers and user's feedback synergies to provide relevant information What we need : - licenses choice need clarification (GPL + BSD : both for both programs & documentation would be a plus, I need to understand how licenses can mix... seems we all need to agree on this : could be used by BSD / Mach / Hurd / Linux and with hardware-vendors negociations ?). I would recommend dual BSD + GPL for distribution, hardware being used for any - dialog on several ML to promote a common approach between distributions (LaptopMission for Ubuntu is clearly an example) - an operationnal web-site with php/postgresql (or mysql) feedback active to provide a functionnal demo, I think that we can find a common implementation of current DB format, comments welcome on previous mails providing an implementation (see https://mail.gna.org/public/librehwdb-dev/2005-04/msg00002.html ) Please provide feedback on what you want to do, include our own-ML in iniatives you find valuable : summer time is a good initiative-wise time to push our ideas forward. @++ Ben'. aka baud123
