We have a command "Fit To Frame" not in the main menu (!) but available via the
shortcut shift+ctrl+F8, which adjusts the text so it fills the size of the text
box. I believe an enhancement in the other way "Fit to Text" is very
reasonable.
We had a discussion in the past on bug 114924 about "Adapt shape Width/Height
to text option not available" (resolved WFM with the idea that we can adjust
the height or width via the dialog), bug 116898 "Please provide Autofit option
also for regular text boxes" (resolved WFM since customization is possible)
