@Eyal: You can show the toolbar "Presentation". It has the drop-down list
"Slide Layout" with illustrations, and changing layout with this tool works
whether something is selected or not. The fact that the toolbar is shown is
remembered. And if you do not need the other tools of that toolbar, disable
them. Or put the command "Slide Layout" into the "Standard" toolbar.
