There is no prior warning, just at some point when reopening the file, the equations are missing. As it is, it isn't even reliably possible to give feedback whether the bug is still there, short of running into it at random with a production document again. Which is probably equally frustrating for users and developers :/ As users we have to make workarounds to minimize the risk of data loss, as developers there's no indication where to even start looking.
