Bug ID: 165308
Summary: Several images and charts in a Writer document
disappear from their frames (frames stay, but are 100
% empty)
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 24.2.7.2 release
Hardware: All
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
The document is a Writer document.
All Images are small bitmaps with roughly 512x512 pixels.
The Writer document contains 20 charts and 25-30 bitmaps in a two-column table,
embedded in the document.
Display "Images and objects" is ticked, and I never touched this setting.
The problem started on my MacBook, most likely because on this machine most of
the objects were added to the document. However, when back on my Ubuntu
machine, the problem persists and got even worse.
It was always saved as FODT, however after switching to ODT the problem
persists.
The behavior seems to be somehow random and objects not necessarily disappear
on writing the file to the disk but also during editing of the file (at least
this happens to lost charts immediately after deleting their empty frames and
copying them over from a backup document, where the were displayed correctly).
Some objects (images/charts) are affected, while other similar objects
(images/charts) are not affected. This stresses the randomness of the behavior.
Both some images and some charts disappear randomly from time to time. However,
the document is almost empty now (apart from the empty frames remaining where
the objects should be shown), because disappeared objects seldom come back (1
or 2 did).
The problem is not an anchor problem because the frames of all the disappeared
objects stay in place.
All images/charts are anchored as characters.
In my opinion, the problem is severe because it starts occurring after people
invested a lot of time in a document with several pages and have to watch their
work decaying.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create an FODS Writer document (Linux or macOS; bug on both machines)
2. Insert 20 bar charts with 5 bars and local data (stored in the document
file) and 30 bitmaps of various sizes (roughly 512x512), all of them located in
a 2-column table, anchored as characters. During inserting them, save, close
and open the document several times.
3. At a certain point in time the first chart or bitmap is not rendered any
more, instead its empty frame, which is exactly located where it should be,
just without the image or chart.
4. Create a backup copy of the document, in order to prevent loss of further
objects.
4. As you add more images or charts to the original document, more and more of
them disappear. Still all their empty frames stay, positioned correctly.
5. Use the backup copy to copy the missing charts over to the original document
(delete the empty frames and replace them by pasting the copied charts, one by
one). Some of them will be recovered that way. However, soon as you paste
copied charts, they are pasted as EMPTY FRAMES (even though in the backup
document actually showed the charts).
Actual Results:
Almost all bitmaps and charts disappeared from their frames, the frames remain
in place, but they are empty.
Expected Results:
LibreOffice Writer should not have removed the bitmaps and charts from the
document.
Reproducible: Sometimes
