In this question, author wants to enforce a sequence of paragraphs with a
specific layout.
I suggested to apply custom paragraph styles to make a clear distinction
between the significance of the paragraphs. Some of these paragraph styles have
_Keep with next paragraph_ enable to avoid unwanted page breaks in the middle
of the sequence.
However this does not work in one case: a paragraph is styled to flag an end of
"minor scene" (with increased space below), followed by a standard narrative
paragraph. Author wants to avoid a page break between these paragraphs so that
the minor transition is visible.
I once again suggested to add _Keep with next paragraph_ to the "end of minor
scene" style. But the end of scene paragraph is part of the narrative and can
be quite large.
_Keep with next paragraph_ is usually ticked for headings or list
"introduction" and these are relatively short (one line of so) so that split
and widow/orphan properties are irrelevant.
In the present case where end-of-scene paragraphs are large, the whole
paragraph is flushed to next page while there would be room to start the
paragraph at bottom of page, continue it on next page and have the subsequent
paragraph with the increased spacing.
The Writer Guides have stated for ages that _Keep with next paragraph_
"ensure[s]
that it is not the last paragraph on a page." But the Guide is silent on the
interaction with _Allow to split paragraph_ and widow/orphan parameters.
>From experiment, it looks like the test looks at the last line in the page to
see if it belongs in a paragraph with _Keep with next paragraph_ without
consideration for the possibility that said paragraph already overflows on next
page (and therefore is also [already ?] the first paragraph on next page).
The observed behaviour is to disable _Allow to split paragraph_ when _Keep with
next paragraph_ is ticked.
Is this an unplanned result of implementation? Available documentation does not
mention such a restriction (I did not check ODF).
If having both _Allow_ and _Keep_ ticked is not forbidden by the standard
(which is here a use-case different from heading usual case), how is it
possible to achieve author's goal?
Author uses 24.2.7.2; I tested with my 25.2.4.3. Same results.
