Reinstall or update should be able to pick up the existing profile, update it to a later format if required & not break things like history. It really needs unit tests for the profile upgrade. However I suppose it's possible that if upgrade a > b corrupts the profile structure but not in a way that causes b problems but an upgrade b > c might not be able to handle the corrupt version b profile. If that were to happen unit tests setting up a clean version b profile wouldn't pick that up. I fail to see why user profile issues should have caused the loss of interface components.
