The problem is not connected to language:
Write a line of text.
Mark it and apply "Bold" as direct formatting by click on the B button.
Now open paragraph styles and apply style "Preformatted Text".

The previously applied "bold" is removed.

Reason seems to be, that a character style change that is applied to an entire
paragraph is not treated as character style but as property of a paragraph
style and thus it is cleared, when a named paragraph style is applied.

If you change the language of only a part of a paragraph and then change the
paragraph style, then the language of the part is kept.
