There is always a canvas, you don't need to define the look and feel by styles.

It's a straight-forward and much easier solution.

Let me recap my point: Using the system selection color for selections is
correct; the only way to make it less obtrusive in cases where the highlight
part is too large is by changing the form but not the color. Yes to a frame, or
the like, but no to another color.
