That happens both in the character properties dialog and in the drop-down in the toolbar. As direct formatting, negative values are indeed invalid. UX: Is it possible to indicate earlier, that the value is invalid? Replacing the invalid value with 2pt is not immediately visible to the user and such too late. For the character style dialog, a negative value is valid. It describes a relative change to the inherited font size.
