Maybe "empty string" is treated differently than "empty cell" (but I don't know why would that be the case). So, either I am doing something wrong when testing those settings, or my expectation is incorrect, or there is a bug related to those Custom settings. Perhaps that's why @Raal got a different result? That was supposed to be the way to solve the difference as a general setting in Calc (AFAIU).
