Bug ID: 172247
Summary: LibreOffice Tabbed UI Extensions Tab Usability Issues
Product: LibreOffice
Version: unspecified
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: UI
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
As part of the improvement work being undertaken for the LibreOffice Tabbed UI
(https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=166641) I would like to
see improvements made to the Extensions tab.
The Extensions tab in LibreOffice's tabbed user interface has several usability
and accessibility issues that make it difficult for users to identify and
select extensions efficiently.
Environment
Feature: Tabbed UI - Extensions tab
Issue type: Usability / user interface defect
Actual Result
•There is no visible divider between different extensions, making it difficult
to distinguish one item (Extension) from another.
•The icons do not include written descriptions or labels.
•The interface relies on small icons only, which reduces clarity and makes
selection more difficult.
Expected Result
The Extensions tab should clearly separate individual extensions, provide text
labels or descriptions for each icon, and use icon sizes that support easy
recognition and selection.
Usability Impact
These issues reduce usability, make extension identification slower, and
increase the likelihood of user error when selecting items in the Extensions
tab. The current design may also create accessibility challenges for users who
rely on clearer visual separation and text labels.
Suggested Improvement
Introduce visible dividers or spacing between extensions, add concise text
descriptions beneath or beside each icon, and increase icon size or provide a
more accessible layout option to improve discoverability and selection
accuracy. In addition, an API should be introduced for the Extensions tab, and
any extension added to this tab should be required to have an associated name
(category) so that it can be clearly identified.
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open LibreOffice.
2.Switch to the tabbed user interface.
3.Open the Extensions tab.
4.Review the available extension icons and attempt to select a specific
extension.
Actual Results:
There is no clear dissemination between installed extensions.
A secondary point is that the extensions tab data is already displayed under
the panel anyway and is always visible. If we have a specific Extensions tab
why is it required to be duplicated under this panel?
Expected Results:
The Extensions tab should clearly separate individual extensions, provide text
labels or descriptions for each icon, and use icon sizes that support easy
recognition and selection. A category name should be created for extensions
displayed in this tab.
Extension creators should be compelled to do this, perhaps an extensions API
that defines this should be created.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: Yes
Additional Info:
With the improvements being made to the Tabbed UI the extensions tab will need
to be expanded upon, in its current form it is not fit for purpose.
