            Bug ID: 172599
           Summary: De-italicize notebookbar-tabbed section
                    titles/captions
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: 26.8.0.0 alpha0+ master
          Hardware: All
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: medium
         Component: UI
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]

Recently, we have introduced the (very much appreciated! Thanks Heiko!)
Notebookbar-tabbed bar section titles/captions, in bug 166641. Unfortunately -
the choice was made to use an italic (effectively, often just slanted) font for
these titles/captions.

I claim we should de-italicize these titles, because:

1. Most scripts don't actually have a notion of "italic" script, and slanting
is just artificial, weird and undesirable from a typesetting perspective. In
other words: In many scripts, you should simply never mark anything as Italic,
period - not in UI, not in running text, not in handwriting, nowhere. It's a
faux pas.

2. In English and Latin-alphabet scripts - Italics (and slanted text) is not
used in UIs, particularly not in labels & titles of UI items. Not in MSO, not
in OnlyO, not in most (or any?) popular FOSS or commercial app that I can think
of.

3.In English and Latin-alphabet scripts - small-size italic/slanted text is
less easily readable than regular (i.e. upright, 'Roman' style, whether cum or
sans serif). It will take our users slightly less time and effort to decipher
the section title.

4. We don't use italics/slanted text in our own UI, anywhere else that I can
think of.

So, let'd de-italicize.
