Description:
Recently I have been seeing garbled Japanese font names in the font list in
LibreOffice.
This include the very common TakaoP fonts. Below is what fontconfig is giving
me:
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/fonts-japanese-gothic.ttf: Takao
Pゴシック,TakaoPGothic,呡歡潐䝯瑨楣:style=Regular
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/fonts-japanese-mincho.ttf: Takao
P明朝,TakaoPMincho,呡歡潐䵩湣桯:style=Regular
fontonfig lists font names in order of suitability according to system and
locale, in this case the first name being Windows Japanese, the second English
(same name for Windos and Macintosh name tables), the third being
"TakaoPMincho" from the Macintosh Japanese name table, encoded in Shift-JIS (or
ISO-8859-1, since Shift-JIS encompasses it) but being processed as UTF-16BE (an
issue I have reported to fontconfig).
For some reason LibreOffice seems to pick up the third one. Why?
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open LibreOffice
2. Look at font list
Actual Results:
67 Japanese fonts with garbled names, some duplicated, some not.
>From as much as 18 makers, free and non free fonts.
Expected Results:
LibreOffice should stick with fontconfig's most suitable font name.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: Yes
Additional Info:
fontconfig issue #550 as for garbled text. But I must stress that fontconfig
reports the most suitable font name first. Mac names should not be proritized,
specially given the vague encoding specifications on Apple's side...
