Bug ID: 172880
Summary: Line breaking algorithm creates incorrect line breaks
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.2.4.2 release
Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64)
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
Writer's line breaking algorithm creates incorrect line breaks under the
following conditions:
- Text alignment is set to "justified",
- Word spacing is set to values *different* from the default 100/100/100%.
Remarks below refer to the attached example document and screenshot:
Case 1 in the example is the bug that hit me in a real document, with several
variations of the unwanted line break position: After the first slash, after
the “1” figure, after the second slash (as shown). I’m unable to reproduce the
other variations in a minimal example. I’m also unable to reproduce the “break
before full stop” case if the “/1/” is plain text instead of a field.
In my real document, the “/1/” is a (literature) reference to a numbered
paragraph, i.e. a field. My feeling from experiments is that field vs. plain
text does make a difference, but the exact type of field does not. I used a
“set variable” field here as it’s easier to experiment with the field contents.
I found cases 2 and 3 while experimenting and writing this bug report.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Load attached line-break-demo.odt in Writer with a fresh profile.
Actual Results:
Line breaks are incorrect.
- Case 1: Writer inserts a line break in front of the terminating full stop of
the example sentence, putting the full stop on a separate line.
- Cases 2 and 3: Writer omits a required line break, causing text to extend
into the right page margin.
Expected Results:
- Case 1: Writer keeps the terminating full stop together with the preceding
character (either break and put "/1/." on a separate line, or fit the whole
"sentence" in a single line).
- Cases 2 and 3: Writer properly justifies, creating one full line and one
vestigial line containing 1 or 2 words.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: Yes
