Bug ID: 173389
Summary: Add better readability and typography by designing and
implementing compound-based “smart” hyphenation
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 27.2.0.0 alpha0+ master
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
Prefer not only word boundaries, but compound constituent boundaries during
“smart” hyphenation to limit bad or worse hyphenation, too, not only
hyphenation.
This is a fundamental requirement for languages with “unlimited” number of
compound words, for example Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, German,
Hungarian, Icelandic, Latvian, Norwegian and Swedish.
Note: “Smart” justify and hyphenation were implemented in Writer in the LO/COOL
Typography and Book projects (funded by NLnet), supporting better readability,
interoperability and DTP-compliance. (Since version 2013, MS Word uses a new
line breaking method: “smart” justify and hyphenation with fixed 75% minimum
word spacing and 150% maximum word spacing. Choosing these values in Writer –
as the DOCX import filter does it automatically –, guarantees only MS-DOCX
layout interoperability.)
Steps to Reproduce:
Open the attached Hungarian document.
Actual Results:
It contains several examples, where the hyphenation is bad or worse, than
splitting the compound word between its constituents (as traditional typography
does).
Expected Results:
Better readability and hyphenation by limiting the hyphenation inside compound
word constituents.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: No
