Unfortunately, the following error prevents the Writer from being used to
create typographically correct fiction book blocks. This renders the new
Paragraph Composer unusable for self-publishing authors. For this reason, I
have marked the bug as ‘major’.
Feel free to adjust the setting if you don't share my opinion.
>From a user's view, the bug consists of four details:
If the line does NOT end by hyphen:
1. Last char of a line sometimes is not touching the right border of the
paragraph: there can be a wide gap.
If the line DOES end by hyphen:
2. The hyphens (automatically inserted by the Writer's hyphenation logic) are
not positioned correctly at the right border:
The user would expect the hyphen to lay onto the right border, so we get a
little bit of optical edge compensation, but the hyphen is sometimes at the
left side / sometimes at the right of the border.
3. There is a (small or wide) gap between the last char of that line and the
following hyphenation glyph.
4. The rightmost ones of the tiny blue interspace dots are shown "somewhere" at
the right side of the paragraph's right border. (of course that's a minor issue
since these are not printed)
My settings for the Paragraph Composer’s thresholds may seem somewhat unusual:
they are intended to achieve the narrow word spacing that has been favoured for
highly legible typography since Tschichold’s time.
Wordspacing:
Min: 70 %
Desired: 90 %
Max: 95 %
Letter spacing:
Min: -2 %
Max: 1 %
Glyph scaling:
Min: 95 %
Max: 101 %
