Bug ID: 173833
Summary: thumbnail.png adds solid white padding to force a
square aspect ratio instead of preserving page
dimensions or using transparency
Product: LibreOffice
Version: unspecified
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: medium
Component: UI
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
When saving a document, LibreOffice generates a thumbnail preview used by file
managers. Currently, it takes the first page (which is usually rectangular,
e.g., portrait A4) and pads the left and right sides with solid white color to
force the preview into a square shape.
Furthermore, displaying rectangular thumbnails that preserve the document's
original page proportions looks much more professional and significantly
improves the user experience.
The thumbnail should either preserve the page's original aspect ratio without
extra padding (similar to PDF thumbnails) or, if padding is required, make the
extra background area transparent instead of solid white.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open LibreOffice and create a standard document (e.g., Writer portrait
page).
2. Save the document.
3. Open file manager (e.g., File Explorer) and view the thumbnail preview of
the saved file.
Actual Results:
The thumbnail in the file manager shows solid white margins on the sides to
force a square image shape.
Expected Results:
The thumbnail should display the first page maintaining its original aspect
ratio (like PDF files) without adding white margins, or the added margins
should be transparent.
Reproducible: Always
