Bug ID: 173844
Summary: Calc Text to Columns: allow decimal and thousands
separators to be specified independently of locale
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.8.1.1 release
Hardware: All
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: medium
Component: Calc
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Add an option in Data > Text to Columns to specify the decimal separator used
when interpreting numbers.
The current dialog relies on the selected language/locale for number
recognition. There is no way to tell Calc to use a different decimal separator
for the data being imported.
This is a common problem when copying or pasting data from the internet.
Data found on websites can use a decimal separator that has nothing to do with
the locale configured on the user's machine.
Reason for the request
The locale of the user's computer describes how the user normally writes
numbers. It does not describe the format of every data source the user
encounters.
Internet data, copied tables, CSV files, exported reports, APIs, and other
external sources can use different conventions. Text to Columns should provide
a way to tell Calc how the source data is formatted without requiring the user
to change their locale or modify the source data first.
This would also make the feature more predictable when copying data between
systems that use different regional settings.
