When I was implementing timer I had thoughts this way: if presenter has limited time, i. e. one has talk at a conference or whatever, it is better to start counting time left instead of elapsed time. If you are looking at elapsed time and have limited time to talk you are forced to calculate time left. The current approach does this for you.
